Second Citizenship With NO Residency Requirement

Updated: Nov 30, 2022

By Parviz Malakouti-Fitzgerald, Esq.

Sometimes, there’s no remedy for the uninformed other than to restate what was clearly elaborated previously.

Such is the case with Dr. Stephen Savran’s September 13th letter Dual citizenship is a heavy lift criticizing my article Why Americans Pursue Second Citizenship as “misleading” and “disingenuous.”

Dr. Savran’s letter highlights a failed understanding of the basic concept of citizenship by descent - an impressive feat considering the concept is self-explanatory.

There is no residency requirement whatsoever for the vast majority of the citizenship by descent programs referenced. Eponymous citizenship by descent is via…descent, not based on residency for a period of years.

Dr. Savran’s letter also goes on a tangent about UK citizenship. UK citizenship was never mentioned in my article.

Finally, aside from a cheap shot aimed at developing Caribbean citizenship by investment countries, Dr. Savran complains that my article on second citizenship “makes it look easy.”

The reality is millions of Americans qualify for European citizenship by descent, without a residency requirement. This is a fact.

Whether Dr. Savran is aware of it, or not, is a separate issue.
