If you’re from the “peach” state of Georgia and applying for citizenship or residency abroad, you may be asked to apostille certain vital documents.

In this article, we go over step-by-step how to request an apostille from the state of Georgia as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Most often the vital document at issue is a Georgia birth certificate, marriage certificate or divorce certificate. Here’s how you apostille a document in Georgia.

Article Outline:

As we explained in our general article on apostilles in the USA, an apostille is a form of authentication of certain official documents.

The authenticated, i.e. “apostilled” documents can then be used in other countries that are signatories to the Hague apostille convention of 1961. Common reasons to need apostille documents include use for foreign residency and citizenship applications, professional and business licensing.

Fortunately, Georgia apostilles can be obtained on the same day in person. Here’s our easy step by step guide on getting a Georgia apostille ASAP

Types of Georgia Documents That Can Be Apostilled

There are many different types of documents that can be apostilled in Georgia. For Americans pursuing second citizenship, the most commonly Georgia issued documents that need to be apostilled tend to be:

  • Birth Certificates

  • Marriage Certificates

Followed by:

  • Court documents

  • Divorce Decrees

  • Death Certificates

  • Georgia State Background Checks

These are not the only types of documents that can be apostilled in Georgia. They are just the most common. Regardless, the process for obtaining an apostille is the same, as discussed below.

Walk-In Service Apostille Requests (No Appointments)

If you are in the Atlanta area, you can apostille your document by walking in to Georgia Superior Court Clerks’ Cooperative Authority (GSCCCA) between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, at:

1875 Century Blvd., Suite 100

Atlanta, GA 30345

No appointment is necessary. For in-person walk-in appointments, you can pay by:

  • cash,

  • personal check,

  • company check,

  • money order, or

  • credit card.

You can apostille multiple documents at once.

Mail-In Requests

If you are not able to apostille your document by walking in, you can mail in your apostille requests. A successful mail-in request needs these four components:

  1. Payment of $3.00 - For mail-in requests, you can pay by personal check, company check money order or credit card;

  2. The document you want to be apostilled;

  3.  A pre-paid, self-addressed envelope or airbill for return. Note: FedEx or UPS return airbills must be computer generated; the GSCCCA will not accept handwritten airbills;

  4. Completed apostille request form (shown below).

We recommend you send in the above four items in a simple 9x12 brown manila envelope, as shown below.

What the Final Georgia Apostille Looks Like

In our experience, Georgia apostille requests are processed and returned with an apostille within two to four weeks.

The document being apostilled will be underneath the apostille page (as shown below).

Note: A Georgia state apostille does not mention the country for which the document has been apostilled. This is advantageous, especially for people apostilling documents ahead of time as part of their mobility-prepping plan.
